During a recent dry-docking, the Shengli No. 9 platform of Shengli Petroleum Engineering's Offshore Drilling Company installed eight items of automated drill string handling equipment, including a Catwalk, an Iron Roughneck and a drill floor pipe handling robot, completing the upgrade of Shengli's first automated offshore drilling platform system.

According to the official media of Sinopec Shengli Oilfield, the company set up an evaluation team of equipment experts to ensure the automation retrofit went smoothly. During installation, platform managers and staff planned carefully so that several complex, interlinked works — relaying out drill floor equipment, relocating top drive guide rails, and optimizing and adjusting the fingerboard structure — proceeded in an orderly way, ensuring that the robotic arm, Iron Roughneck, Catwalk, power slips and powered mousehole were all installed right first time. The retrofit plays an important role in reducing the number of people at the wellhead and the intensity of work, lowering safety risks and preventing falls from height.

The Iron Roughneck on the Shengli No. 9 platform is JJC's SW10-D1 model, which completes pipe make-up/break-out and spinning quickly and safely. After repeated upgrades it now offers greater spinning torque and better efficiency, and it is fitted with a blowout-prevention function.
